In 2010, former Chanel nose Jacques Polge crafted a new masculine fragrance to sit alongside classics like Égoïste and Allure Homme. Aiming for something “honest and pure… without embellishments”, he focused on the essential elements of “freshness, spice and woody dryness”. The result was Chanel Bleu de Chanel – a unique woody-aromatic scent that pioneered the ‘Blue’ genre.
Polge’s Bleu de Chanel debut was an Eau de Toilette with an energetic, citrus-fresh opening and a warm, sandalwood-tinged drydown. The vibrant, exhilarating composition was presented in an enigmatic, unconventional bottle with a deep navy tone whose mysterious allure Coco Chanel would have enjoyed. A symbol of masculine freedom, Bleu de Chanel celebrated the refined modern man who forged his own path – an archetype embodied by Chanel’s first male ambassador, Gaspard Ulliel. The suave French actor appeared in an atmospheric short film directed by Martin Scorsese whose tagline, “be unexpected”, encouraged men to defy convention, just like the fragrance.
The Eau de Toilette won multiple awards and became one of the best-selling men’s perfumes. Polge built on its success with 2014’s elegant Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum, which maintained the original’s freshness while deepening the rich amber and cedar notes in its signature woody base. Ulliel showcased the versatile interpretation in James Gray’s abstract, dreamy story of a man who rejects external constraints to live on his own terms.
Jacques Polge retired as Chanel nose in 2015, leaving his son Olivier in charge of the Chanel Bleu de Chanel line. His dark, sophisticated Parfum elevated the intensity of the drydown, bringing the creamy sandalwood and rich cedar facets to the fore upon its launch in 2018. Its mature aroma was more suited to evenings and formal occasions, as reflected in Ulliel’s portrayal of an introspective protagonist in Steve McQueen’s sleek film about a man escaping the noisy modern world to find inner calm and contentment.
Timothée Chalamet became the face of Bleu de Chanel in 2023, with Martin Scorsese returning to direct a stylish campaign based on themes of public versus private personas and looking inwards to discover one’s authentic self. Two years later, Olivier Polge released his second Bleu interpretation, L’Exclusif. Profoundly intense and majestic, it was the ultimate expression of the woody-aromatic accord, with deep swathes of leather, amber and resin alongside a dark, musky edge. To mark its launch, Chalamet and Polge were filmed discussing the evolution of its dense, complex character, before actor Jacob Elordi took over as the brand ambassador for Chanel Bleu de Chanel in 2026.
Elordi’s debut short, The Chase, was directed by Academy Award winner Alfonso Cuarón. It depicted the charismatic Australian in a more action-packed role opposite a masked femme fatale who attempts to steal his L’Exclusif. Signifying a contemporary Bleu era, the central male figure was now more instinctive, playful and self-assured rather than soul-searching and contemplative. The new cubic bottle also emerged as a key character, driving the dynamic narrative of the fast-paced, seductive film.
Chanel Bleu de Chanel is a sophisticated collection of woody-aromatic men’s perfumes ranging from bright, fresh and citrusy to deep, intense and mysterious. Highly versatile, it offers likeable everyday scents, warm, captivating fragrances and mature, seductive aromas, allowing the modern man to exude refined elegance, subtle strength and an enigmatic aura.
