Vanilla has been a common ingredient in scent-making since the late-19th century. In the early 1990s, a trend emerged for gourmand fragrances that saw it become even more popular, and by the 2020s, there were thousands of interpretations of the vanilla accord. Despite this, French master perfumer Amandine Clerc-Marie still found room for novelty, embarking on a bold exploration that culminated in the captivating Burberry Goddess fragrance line.
Burberry Goddess debuted in 2023 with an aromatic Eau de Parfum featuring a stunning trio of vanilla extracts. A vanilla infusion creates the bright, woody opening, with hints of lavender, cacao and ginger to temper its sweetness, while vanilla caviar enriches the heart and dark, mysterious absolute the base. Well-balanced and refined, the Eau de Parfum was presented in an elegant, square-shaped flacon inspired by vintage silhouettes. It was also Burberry’s first refillable bottle, with an exquisite golden medallion, and a gabardine-style label on the packaging that paid homage to the label’s deep-rooted fashion heritage. British-French actress Emma Mackey fronted the launch campaign, starring alongside a pride of lionesses in a powerful short film that began the story of self-discovery and female empowerment at the heart of the Goddess journey.
In 2024, Clerc-Marie crafted the first Goddess flanker, Eau de Parfum Intense. Stripping back the opening to a luminous lavender aroma, she brought together the three signature vanilla extractions from the original at its heart alongside a fourth known as vanilla SFE. This innovative extraction preserves the smoky, resinous aspects of the raw beans without damaging their natural warmth, thus giving greater depth and intensity to the fragrance. At the base, patchouli added a smooth, chocolatey nuance while elongating the sultry, alluring trail. Mackey reprised her role as the face of Intense, her character harnessing the warming rays of the setting sun to unlock her inner power.
Building on the success of these aromatic gourmand perfumes, Clerc-Marie developed the Burberry Goddess Parfum in 2025. This time, the lavender top note was joined by a fruity hint of raspberry that was just sharp enough to cut through the sweetness of the elevated vanilla at its heart, while leathery suede introduced sumptuous sophistication to the base. Representing Emma Mackey’s continuing journey into ambery darkness, the clear glass of the Parfum’s bottle had a delicate bronze tinge inspired by the warming tones of the setting sun.
Clerc-Marie deepened the fragrance line further in 2026 as she designed a third flanker called Burberry Goddess Amber Vanilla. In the opening, she introduced velvety-sweet maple syrup alongside lavender, intensifying the gourmand richness of the four vanilla heart notes, which consisted of the classic trio and an indulgent roasted vanilla with a caramel-like scent that connects smoothly to the sensual, ambery base. This intense fragrance took Burberry Goddess into a new chapter celebrating a sophisticated femininity based on wisdom and self-confidence, once again expertly embodied by Mackey. Its elegant bottle also reflected this development, with a darker, golden-orange tone redolent of a deep, fading sunset.
Amandine Clerc-Marie’s Burberry Goddess is a compelling fragrance line that offers a bold exploration of vanilla across four beautiful perfumes ranging from bright, warm and vibrant to rich, dark and mysterious.
